About Us

The Genetic Epilepsy in Adults Network (GEAN) was founded to change the way genetics is integrated into adult epilepsy care. Our efforts are generously supported by an infrastructure grant from the American Epilepsy Society (AES).

We believe it is critical to diagnose and study genetic epilepsies in adult patients. Genetic testing has revolutionized the conceptualization of epilepsy and opened the door for a new age of understanding and new precision treatments. While genetic testing has been a staple of pediatric neurology for several decades, the integration of genetic testing and genetic medicine into adult epilepsy practice has been much slower.

Our network aims to:

  • Create a multi-center registry of deeply phenotyped adult patients with genetic epilepsies to improve our understanding of the natural history of these conditions and facilitate the development and study of treatments for these individuals.

  • Build a network of clinicians and researchers with expertise in adult epilepsy genetics who can advance the care of adult individuals with genetic epilepsy through education, resource development, advocacy and research.
